As far as the football goes, I watched carefully the personnel in the starting secondary. As was reported on our discussion forum, the safety in the starting unit was indeed an import - Josh Bell. He was surrounded by Bennett and Smith at their usual corner and halfback spots respectively. Jamar Wall filled in the other halfback spot and rookie Ryan Steed manned the other corner. I was told that Steed had seen a lot of time with the #1 unit. When the second unit came out, it was Berger in at safety although I was informed that Hecht had spent some time there as well.
On the offensive line it is looking like Craighead and Wilson will get the guard positions. They have the inside track and have impressed - though it is tough to truly evaluate a lineman in practices without pads. Wilson is the vet who has already paid his dues. Craighead is a massive man and has the bite to match.
The receivers looked very good, there were only a handful of balls on the ground the entire practice.
I wanted to see if there was any separation at QB, where Bo Levi Mitchell and Drew Tate are competing for the #1 job. They both have the swagger of veteran players and did well. I can't imagine their spot will be settled based on their play in practice.
I didn't get to see much of the defense as they were on the far side of the field and I didn't have clearance to walk wherever I wanted. I do want to get a look at Gerald McRath who comes to camp with 40 games of NFL experience which makes him a very highly touted prospect.
