I count 86 players on the roster, including the injured and the suspended. Micah Johnson is on the suspended list (due to an injury last season) and likely isn't counted in the number, so we will set it at 85. Of the 85, 11 are non-counters to bring the number down to 74 who are under consideration to bring their roster down to 65 for Sunday. That means nine cuts.
So, who gets the axe? It really is too early to say exactly, but looking at the roster, there are some ideas:
Canadians: There won't be many Canadians let go. The Stampeders currently have 37 Canadians in camp. They need to dress 21 each game. 5 go on the practice roster. 10 are already non-counters. That means adds up to 36 players. They could release one Canadian, but I don't think they do, unless one of their non-counters has been particularly unimpressive and they do not think he has a future. I don' t expect that to happen. 0
Running Back: The Stampeders currently have three import running backs on the roster, and are likely to keep two. Sanders doubles as a return guy and the other goes to the practice roster as injury insurance. I could see the Stampeders letting either Toston or Harrison go on Sunday and with that in mind, they will both probably get a lot of playing time – unless the decision has already been made. 1
Receiver: Currently the Stampeders have 11 import receivers. Last year they carried four on the roster most games and had approximately another three imports on the injured list or practice roster for a total of seven. What makes this position tricky is training camp reports suggest that several of the young receivers have been very good. The Stamps may want to hang on to them for a while and not rush to make a decision and this could mean carrying a couple on an injured list to start the season. They also may want to see if any teams would be interesting in trading for some of their talented newcomers if they don’t have room for them all. I’m going to say the Stampeders will release two import receivers. 2
Quarterback: The Stampeders have four import quarterbacks on the roster and will only be going with three. The second pre-season game is typically time for the top two to find their rhythm and so that means they need to make their decision this week. One of the young import QBs will be released on Sunday. 1
Import defensive back: The Stampeders currently have 11 imports. Last year they carried seven on the roster each game and carried two on the practice roster for a total of nine. I expect they will release at least one defensive back and maybe two. I am going with 2.
Import linebacker: They have five left in camp, and liked to dress four each game last year. I'd be surprised if they released even one because with Love coming off an injury, that would leave them too thin. I think this group of five will all make the team, though one will probably wind up on the practice roster or injured list. 0
Import defensive line: The Stampeders currently have nine import defensive linemen in camp. Last year the Stampeders normally dressed four and had another two on a practice roster or injured list for a total of six. I would expect one or two to be released. I will go with one. 1
Special teams: The Stampeders currently have one too many kickers and one too many long-snappers and could choose to settle things on Sunday. I don't think they will. I can't imagine they will release the record setting Parades which means Crapigna will need to find a new home. I expect the Stampeders will try to see if they can extract an asset from another team for him, rather than release him outright, because he does look to have the abilities to be a good kicker in the CFL. The other contentious spot is long snapper. St. Pierre is likely safe as either the starting or backup long-snapper because he also plays fullback. That means one of Chevrier or Tyo will be released. Because Tyo is a non-counter, it doesn't really help get under the 65 man roster. If they chose to release Chevrier, it would. I still think Chevrier is the best long snapper in the game, so I do not think he will be released. There are moves that need to be made with the specialists, but I think it will wait until the final cutdown. 0
